October is truly Hitchcock's month.

@Sam - Hey, good list. Ha. Hitchcock is my favorite. I don't know if he's the greatest (it's some stiff competition), but I think there's a possibility that he is the most accessible and prolific of the great directors, which is certainly a tally in his favor.

@Tony - Thanks, man. I'm looking forward to your feedback, too.

@MovieMan - Yes, I totally agree on Saboteur, although on the whole it's not one of my favorite of Hitchcock's ... I was tempted to go into AH Presents, inspired by your tour de force analysis of Twin Peaks, but the time just isn't there. Hopefully in the future I can include in a more TV-based analysis month.

@T.S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00945932279787919282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8214297712303916286.post-82917014270024364472008-10-01T11:33:00.000-04:002008-10-01T11:33:00.000-04:00Great intro; I eagerly await the series. Funny you...Great intro; I eagerly await the series. Funny you should mention Saboteur - I just saw it for the first time (I write-up will probably pop up on my blog in the next week or so, especially now that my Paul Newman retro has been dashed - apparently others had the same idea and there's been a run on Netflix's copies of Hud & The Hustler. Oh well.)

I had only seen the Statue of Liberty sequence before, and it struck me how odd the rest of the film was. It seems like a transitional work between his often quirky British works and the more straight-ahead (while still blackly comic) American films. Certainly, it's the most American of the early 40's films that I've seen - Rebecca and Suspicion haven't quite embraced the new homeland yet.

Sorry to hear you won't be tackling the TV episodes though with your tight schedule it's understandable. I hope you do approach them in the future. Like David Lynch on Twin Peaks, whenever Hithcock sat in the director's chair for his own show, the results were remarkable and distinctive. And of course, his intros...

Good luck!Joel Bockohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11238338958380683893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8214297712303916286.post-1689807759323944822008-10-01T01:43:00.000-04:002008-10-01T01:43:00.000-04:00Hello! Well, his opposition would be Bergman, Bresson, Bunuel, Renoir, Ozu, Mizoguchi, Chaplin, Welles, Ford, Fellini, Dreyer, Eisenstein, Tarkovsky, Kieslowski, Tarr and Powell and Pressburger among a few others. But he certainly has made the MOST greatest films, if that is to be considered.
You could not have written a more thorough opening salvo in this much-anticipated series. It's not neo-realism as pure as someone like de Sica or Rossellini, but it's one of Hitchcock's few (if not only) movies based on a true story.

@FilmDr - Aha! Well, The 39 Steps might be the exception to the rule. :) I'll try to devote some time to Hitchcock's writing sessions with people; maybe come Rear Window, when he began his collaboration with John Michael Hayes. I just read Patrick McGilligan's biography of Hitchcock, and he discusses the collaborative effort in writing very nicely.

@Daniel and Jason - Thanks for the anticipation!

@DarkCity - Good point. I won't be able to get to any of the remakes of Hitchcock's films, but maybe in the future I'll devote some time to them. (Most fall so depressingly short of the original it's hard to even think about them!)

@Deadpan - Ha! Well, it's been a long time in the making (longer even than the life of this blog), so fortunately it shouldn't drive me as insane as if I were trying to do it all at once.T.S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00945932279787919282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8214297712303916286.post-17466120032160083622008-09-30T18:24:00.000-04:002008-09-30T18:24:00.000-04:00I am really excited!
